Why should you study in the UK at an early age?

architecture-buildings-campus-220351.jpg

For International students, commencing education at an early age in UK has several advantages such as:

  1. More likely in scoring 3 or 4 As or A*s because of the traditional smaller class sizes of 9-10 students, allowing students to receive personalised attention from their tutors. Besides, the study periods in boarding schools are supervised, ensuring every student complete their assignments duly. Weekly tests will also be conducted, giving students feedback of their progress. In addition, frequent practice in tackling examination questions in a familiar setting so that the final examinations are no different or more threatening than the weekly tests.

  2. Improved chances of entering Oxbridge and medical, dental, veterinary science and law schools because of the following reasons

    • UK students are given more time and space to explore their career interests at an earlier age under the mentorship of college and career counsellors. This allows them to nurture relevant skillsets that will aid them into their passing interviews for selective universities.

    • UK students are more confident and are more familiar with the British accent. They can handle tough questions and the multi-miniature interviews where practical skills, thinking on the feet, reacting to real life issues, giving one's ethical stands will be tested.

    • For medical and law students, there are opportunities to attend exclusive workshops and seminars aimed at giving students a taste of life in a medical or law school; meeting seniors to get a first-hand knowledge of life as a medic in a particular university; and learning simple medical techniques such as first aid.

    • The application process favours UK-based students as they are already in the UK and it is more convenient for Admission Tutors to call them for interviews.

  3. Learn to be independent, train your judgement and to mature faster, which are very important for those aspiring for Oxbridge or other prestigious courses.

Most of our partner schools offer Sixth Form college boarding programme. This has several merits over day-programmes. Based on a study conducted, “The focus in the sixth-form college on progression to higher education meant that students at the college tended to be better informed, better prepared and more confident about progression to higher education.” Ensuring a smooth transition from college to university is the most beneficial for any student and it helps to ease any uncertainties one may have in a foreign land, allowing them to focus and perform their best academically.

The UK Education System

UK Education system.png

The schools in UK generally offer up to four main types of curriculum in their final four years (Years 10 to 13): the GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) followed by A Level (Advanced Level), the IB Diploma (International Baccalaureate) or more recently the Cambridge Pre-U.

GCSEs

Over two years, British students study around nine or ten GCSE subjects, normally beginning in the British Year 10 (age 14). For some international students, Year 11 (age 15) provides an perfect point of entry into the UK system. This would catapult students to a year before IB or GCSE courses, allowing them sufficient time to adapt to the foreign system.

A Levels

The A Level is the traditional British school leaving qualification. Normally three (or four) subjects are studied in the  Years 12 and 13, also known as Sixth-Form. The A Levels are suitable for students with particular strengths in certain areas, allowing them to deepen their understanding.

The IB Diploma

A truly international programme, the IB Diploma has become increasingly popular in UK schools in recent years due to the breadth of its curriculum. The robust curriculum would nurture strong all-rounders, as well as keeping university course choices open for longer. Through this IB programme, students aged 16-18 study a total of six subjects, which they chose from six separate subject groups, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, with equal weighting given to each. The IB curriculum focuses on developing critical thinking, independent research skills and encourages personal/interpersonal development, which are essential for their university years.

By definition, the UK higher education is the level of education that follows the secondary school at the hierarchy of educational system in the UK. Upon completion of secondary school in the UK, students progressed to either a Sixth Form college or Further Education college. Difference between the two is the former typically offers advanced school-level qualifications, such as A-levels, while Further Education college focuses more on skillsets and offers a wider range of courses. After which, the students then progress on to Universities, pursuing their degree.
